| Bong Joon-ho
Born in 1969, Bong studied sociology at Yonsei University in Seoul. In 1995 he received a diploma from the Korean Academy of Fine Arts. Between 1994 and 1995 he produced his first short films. In 1997 he worked as a director’s assistant in Motel Cactus by Park Ki-gong and in 1999 wrote the screenplay for Phantom:The Submarine by Min Byung-Chun. His first long feature film, Barking Dogs Never Bite came in 2000, winning the Fipresci Prize at the Hong Kong Film Festival in 2001 and in Italy was presented at the International Exhibit of New Cinema of Pesaro. Memories of Murder came in 2003 and brought 5 million moviegoers in Korea to the box office, garnering numerous awards worldwide: Best Asian Film at the Tokyo International Film Festival, Best Director in San Sebastian, People’s Award at the Festival of Youth Cinema of Torino. In 2004 he produced two digital short features. His third film, The Host, firmly establishing his place among the moviegoers and the critics, was awarded in Pusan and was in the program of the Quinzaine des Realisateurs of Cannes. The film established a new box office record with just under 13 million tickets sold in Korea. Currently, he is working on a segment of a film in episodes on the city of Tokyo, with the additional segments to be produced by the French cinematographers Leos Carax and Michel Gondry.
